Wilmywood Birthdays This Week

by April Vickery

LaraWilmywood is celebrating four “Hard to Miss” stars this week! First off, Happy 44th to the timelessly beautiful Lara Flynn Boyle who is connected to Wilmywood by the film ‘THE ROAD TO WELLVILLE‘ directed by Alan Parker. Lara played the character, “Ida Muntz” in this 1994 comedy. WELLVILLE took the cast and crew to scenic Orton Plantation in Winnabow and they filmed several scenes here in Wilmington.
Lara has been in over 40 roles on TV and the big screen including the 1992 film WAYNE’S WORLD and her striking beauty paired well with her comedic timing to make her the ultimate weapon in one of my personal favorites, MEN IN BLACK II.  The Emmy and SAG award nominated actress is rumored to have just finished ‘LUCKY DOG’ directed by Michael Feifer. The film is in currently in it’s post-production process. She celebrates on the 24th!
Jason-Castro-(singer)-wallpaperOn the 25th, THE PERFECT SUMMER‘s dreadlock having heartthrob, Jason Castro turns 27! This American Idol came to Wilmywood to heat up the beaches as “Cody” in the Swirl Productions Film directed by Gary Wheeler in 2013! This Texas native is best known for his musical talents, but he showed all of us here in Wilmywood what he could do without his guitar.  THE PERFECT SUMMER took place ALL OVER Wilmywood and so many of our talented actors here got to spend days working with the crew. Working all day on the beach? Not a bad gig! Wrightsville Beach welcomed the light eyed crooner with open arms and wishes him a happy birthday!
babyI’m positive that on Wednesday the 26th nobody will put Baby in the corner for her 54th birthday! Jennifer Grey is best know as “Baby Houseman” in the 1987 film ‘DIRTY DANCING‘. Baby and camp dance instructor, Johnny Castle (played by Patrick Swayze) fell into forbidden summer love *swoon* set to music. This Emile Ardolino film wasn’t shot in Wilmywood, however it is North Carolina proud.  They shot this dance-a-riffic flick throughout Asheville, Lake Lure and Lure Woods here in NC. Jennifer was also in the 1986 film FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF with another one of our celeb birthday celebrators, Lara Flynn Boyle. Lara’s scenes ended up being cut from the film, but the work earned her a SAG card and Jennifer went on to be remembered as the big sister nobody wanted to mess with. Happy Birthday Jennifer!
vinceLast and certainly not least is the one and only Vince Vaughn who celebrates on the 28th! He is mostly known as the “funny guy” on screen but brought his character of “Rick Barnes” in 2001’s DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE to life with a fierceness that I am sure none of us expected. Luckily for us in Wilmywood it was all pretend and this intimidatingly tall actor (he’s 6’5″) was a big teddy bear who was often seen enjoying the many restaurants and pubs that downtown Wilmington has to offer with his co-stars John Travolta and Steve Buscemi.  Well, there was this one time…Nah, not going there!  Vince is currently filming TERM LIFE which is directed by Peter Billingsley in Atlanta, GA. Vince will be 44. Happy Birthday from Wilmywood!

The Perfect Weekend for The Perfect Summer

WHAT’S UP IN WILMYWOOD 05/14/2013 – New Reality Show, Perfect Summer, Tammy, Under the Dome, Sleepy Hollow

LISTEN TO PODCAST

Perfect_SummerAnother day in Wrightsville Beach for the cast and crew of The Perfect SummerJason Castro had a great first day as the laid back surf shop owner yesterday.  They will be back at it at the same location today, Aussie Island Surf Shop.  Looks like we will see Jason Castro,  Katie Garfield, JD Banks, Adam Horner and Justin Barnhill shooting.  I am gonna try to stop by the set today and get some scoop for ya!  Thanks to Gary Wheeler for the set pic!

A fun filled day for Tammy as well as they finally get off Nun St. and head to Castle Hayne.  We will be seeing just Melissa McCarthy today with about 8 extras on hand.  There will be a detour as  a 1-mile section of Blue Clay Road will be closed to traffic from Old Mill Road to Holly Road today.

Yesterday I posted the preview for Sleepy Hollow that was shot in the Charlotte area.  If you missed it, check it out now!

Super huge scene for Under the Dome as they are already rolling today at 5th and Castle.  Huge stunts too!  The scene involves a semi-truck crashing into a water tower.  This had the talented set construction folks super busy all week, building the faux water tower.  I was hoping for major explosions today, but I heard they are doing the visual fx in post (but maybe we will get lucky).  But it will still be exciting because not only is it a crazy fun stunt filled day, but it will also be star-studded as well.  Dean Norris, Rachelle LeFevre, Samantha Mathis, Natalie Martinez, Colin Ford – just about all the lead characters will be in this scene as well as a plethora of extras!  Where will be tons of coverage, so they will be shooting until the sun goes down.  This scene will affect traffic patterns as well so find an alternate route!

Doron Ofir Casting (the casting company for Jersey Shore), is casting a new reality show, American Proud – The Party is Down South.  They are searching for the proudest Southerners who are at least 21 years old that are ready to show the world they’re country strong! “If you like your chicken fried, and you’re full of American pride, we are looking for you!”  Local boy Mike Waggett is a recruiter for the company and is asking you to: “Git’er done and apply now!” Email a photo of yourself along with your contact info and tell him why you are “American Proud. ”

Fianlly, CONGRATS to Vanessa and Kim!  NCasting got the gig!  They will be casting Eastbound and Down Season 4.  Look for opportunities to work on the HBO show soon!

That just about does it for me; I will have more Wilmywood updates for you tomorrow morning and every morning (Monday-Friday) at 8:30am on Sunny 104.5.  Got Scoop?  email me: sheila@1045sunnyfm.com.  Until then, that’s a wrap!

WHAT’S UP IN WILMYWOOD 05/13/2013 – VIP Afterglow, Bob Guiney, Scott Grimes,Tammy, and more

WHAT’S UP IN WILMYWOOD

LISTEN TO PODCAST

What a mixed weekend!  Great times were had during the Port City Pop Con.  A HUGE thank you to Mike Roberts for putting on the event with stars everywhere! They were so kind and just about all of them said the same about Wilmington.  “Everyone is so nice here”!  Yeah, we know, that’s one of the reasons why we choose to live here! The Con included VIP meet n greets and a VIP Afterglow at the Calico Room downtown.

GuineyandGrimesThe highlight of the VIP party had to be Bob Guiney and Scott GrimesGuiney and Grimes put on an amazing duo acoustic performance.  We had Dee Wallace  and Ernie Hudson in the front of the crowd completely enjoying the performance.  FYI – they are the sweetest people in the world!  I really hope I get to stay in touch with those folks. Make sure you check out today’s podcast, I have a clip from Saturday night at the Calico Room on Front Street.  They also performed their original, “I’m Goin Home”  It’s a great song and is available for FREE on Sound Cloud!

The news of NBC’s Revolution moving to Austin, TX got some people down this weekend, and some outraged, blaming it on the politicians.  While I can appreciate the spirit and love for NC Film, I can tell you, they didn’t move for that reason.  The storyline is moving and with that so do the locations.  I will definitely miss the cast, but I believe it is not necessarily a bad thing.  This gives room for productions that were pushed back to come to ILM sooner as crew members become available to them.  All my NC Film industry peeps, I would love to hear your thoughts about my take on it.  Lemme know what you think by commenting below!

Now moving on to the productions that are still here.  The Perfect Summer welcomes American Idol’s Jason Castro to his first day on set!  They will be at Aussie Island Surf Shop in Wrightsville Beach.  Jason plays a laid back surf shop owner.

Under the Dome is still in Burgaw and Tammy is back on Nun St. again today!  Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon and Toni Collette will be on set.

That just about does it for me; I will have more Wilmywood updates for you tomorrow morning and every morning (Monday-Friday) at 8:30am on Sunny 104.5.  Got Scoop?  email me: sheila@1045sunnyfm.com.  Until then, that’s a wrap!

Experts say the US Box Office projections are well over $100 million.  Thank you Captain Obvious.
