Wilmington 4th Grader Helps the Homeless

THIS NEEDS TO SPREAD LIKE A WILDFIRE! READ BELOW AND SHARE!!!

Okay, so this might not be film related, but this little girl is a superstar in my book and I had to let you know about her!  Her mother sent me an email this morning and I had to share!

Dear Sheila,
We listen to you every morning on the way to school, and love that you are always positive and spreading happiness and kindness (even about merging traffic from Leland!) So we thought you might be able to help. After watching a youtube video (see below) about homelessness, my (almost) 9 year old decided to take action here in Wilmington. I’ll let her tell you in her own words (below.)

“Hi my name is Leah. I am 4th grader in Wilmington, NC, and I want to help homeless people get ready for job interviews. To do this I am collecting extra business clothes and toiletries (makeup, baby wipes, tooth brushes, etc.). I think with these things, homeless people will look better and feel more confident when they are getting interviewed. Giving food and money to the homeless is a very great thing to do, but it only really lasts for a couple days. With a job they can get a lot of money every day to buy food and maybe find a home if they get a good one. I was inspired by the woman at the end of the video below, and wanted to find a way to help.

So, if you have business clothes that you don’t need any more or if you have some extra toiletries like the ones listed above or other things that you think would help homeless people might use to feel more presentable I will be at the Food Lion parking lot on South College Drive at 17th Street, every Sunday from 10:00am to 12:00pm now until Thanksgiving. Look for my mom’s big blue minivan. I’ll be there and my dog Otis will probably be there too. I hope you will donate and we can put a stop to homelessness.”

You go girl! Go Leah! We got your back! So everyone, please share this.  My heart grew 3 sizes reading this email her mother sent and I am not even remotely a Grinch!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 09/25/2014 Banshee, Homeland, Under the Dome, South of Hell, Paper Towns

Howdy!  As you can tell, I have not been posting everyday.  Why?  Well, with the NC film incentives coming to an end in December, there are no new productions that are making announcements, no new offices setting up.  It is simply bone dry.  So, yes, NC Film obviously affects my little small business I call a blog.  I do have some tidbits to share however. So, let’s get right to it.

Sadly this week, Banshee (pictured above) and Homeland in Charlotte are tearing down their sets down and relocating them to other states due to the film incentives expiring at the end of the year. Banshee will relocate to Louisiana while Homeland won’t return to Charlotte next season. The location for Homeland is yet to be determined.

tscc3

Thank God, Producer Marty Bowen (who was just here for The Longest Ride) has returned to Charlotte to set up offices for one of the last films to come to North Carolina this year. It’s called Paper Towns and stars Nat Wolff.  Nan Morales has been named Line Producer. Production begins in November. There is not a an email set up yet, but you can send your crew resume via fax: 855.593.5484.  (Fax?  Who does that anymore?)

Battlecreek decided not to head to North Carolina. They will be filming in Mississippi after all.

Under the Dome extras casting director Vanessa Neimeyer will relocate to South Carolina for the project South of Hell for WEtv. Also headed that way are many of the crew members, office staff and a producer from Under the Dome as well. No word yet on where Under the Dome will be shooting for season 3. GET MORE DETAILS NOW

CucKick

Cucalorus needs your help and you have 22 days left to make a donation to Cucalorus. Your donation will support more than 250 artists who will be presenting new work at the 20th annual Cucalorus Film Festival in November. More than half of your donation will go directly to filmmakers. Each year Cucalorus provides artists with over $50,000 in direct financial support. Help them in their mission to bring people together to celebrate, discover and create independent films. Sleepy Hollow is on hiatus this week and will return to a shoot schedule next week. Secrets and Lies stayed in their Porter’s Neck Location and the sound stages most of the week. But they did sneak out one day this week off Brandon Road.

Jason_ReturnedThe Returned returns to ABC!  Well, we know it as Resurrection which films in Georgia, but yes we do have that local connection!  It is based on the book written by our local author Jason Mott. Season Two premieres Monday night on ABC!

On the political front, William Osborne is running against President Pro Temp Senator Phil Berger for the NC Senate 26th District Seat.  Berger MUST GO!  So, feel free to spread the word to folks you know in Guilford and Rockingham Counties.

Please view the complete list of all the members of the House and the Senate. You will see statewide, who is for and who is against the current film incentives. We need to make sure the General Assembly FEELS the affects of the film industry, ESPECIALLY at the polls!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 09/22/2014 Battlecreek, Paper Towns, Sleepy Hollow, Yellow Footprints and more

We might have just one more production to hit Wilmywood before our current film incentives ends.  Rumor has it, the feature film, Battlecreek, is coming to Wilmington.  If this is indeed true, we would be hosting the gorgeous Hayden Christiansen who is taking the lead as well as the Oscar winning actress, Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Prisoners).  They came into Wilmington to scout the area last week. Now there are mixed rumors going around.  Some say it will be in just Wilmington, others say it will be filming in Jackson, MS and Wilmington.  But there is the possibility that they just shoot in Mississippi.  They are looking at a start date of October 20th. Offices would open the first week of October if they do come here.  We shall see!

Battlecreek is the story of a gifted young painter (Hayden Christiansen) with a rare skin disorder who lives in an economically depressed Southern American town. Due to his affliction, he must live his life at night. When a young woman being chased by her own demons stumbles into town, their blossoming romance compels him to challenge his provocative, overbearing mother (Melissa Leo) and break free of the lies that have bound them together for years. Battlecreek is about reconciling the past and finding your future.

Producing is Connie Hoy.  Directing is Alison Eastwood, which I believe is Clint Eastwood’s neice?  Hopefully it is more than just a rumor.  More details to come soon.

SH_Tonight

As  @SHollowSource puts it, #SleepyHolla!! Sleepy Hollow / Under the Dome viewing party is tonight at the Browncoat at 111 Grace St Downtown, Wilmington.

Sleepy premieres at 9pm on FOX and Dome’s finale is at 10pm on CBS.

LyndieGreenwoodSleepy Hollow star Lyndie Greenwood sits down with HuffPost Live at 3:30pm to talk about season two of the hit fantasy drama, which returns September 22 on Fox.  HERE’S THE LINK

Yellow Footprints is to begin production here in Wilmington. Local lady Casey Mako will direct this coming of age female military film, about a young woman who strives to be a Marine and fight on the front lines in a position traditionally held only by men.

TarynTaryn Terrell (WWE, The Campaign, Old Boy), has signed on to play the role of Sarah, a girl with a heart of gold who has suffered unimaginable loss, and finds a physical and mental strength to move on in her own life and inspire the will of others to believe they can do whatever they set their minds to.

The cast will be predominantly female and will feature Christy Berlane, (New Comic Day), and young new comer Hayley Heffernan, (30 Rock, Vera, 846).

Produced and co-written by Nick Dash and co-written by Monica Bellais, production is expected to begin in early October. Dash is a former Marine, is inspired to honor and tell a positive story regarding female Marines, ripped straight from the headlines, now that legislation has been approved for females to fight equally on the front lines with their male counterparts. Dash plans to employ homeless veterans in various extra roles in this film to bring awareness to the issue of homelessness and our beloved veterans.

Cara_DCara Delevingne has been added to the cast of Paper Towns which shoots in Charlotte, NC this fall.  She will take on the role of Margo Roth Spiegelman opposite of Nat Wolff. Paper Towns is expected to begin production in November with offices projected to open at the end of September.

‘The Longest Ride’ star “Rango” passes away.

Rango [PBR]

Earlier this week, the Professional Bull Riders announced that Rango, one of the stars of not just the elite Built Ford Tough Series, but also the Nicholas Sparks movie, The Longest Ride, passed away on Sunday morning. According to PBR, the 7-year-old bovine athlete was admitted to the hospital for intestinal issues and passed away after experiencing heart troubles while receiving treatment.

Rango was owned by four-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year Jeff Robinson. He said, “I have had several hundred bulls compete at the Built Ford Tough Series level and he was my second-best bull ever. He wasn’t my second favorite bull – no, he was No. 1(a). He meant a lot to me. There is no way he will ever be replaced.” [PBR}

One of the crew members who worked on the project in Winston-Salem, NC was also taken aback by the news. “He was a big deal in that movie, he was written into the script and everything.” Rango was a cast member.  “He even had his own doubles,” the crew member said. Other bulls had a little make-up done to create  his likeness. “It was great working with Rango. The Humane Society was there watching him like a hawk. We enjoyed working with them, too.”  Rango had a majestic way about him and he had 1,000s of fans. “He was probably the most athletic bull in the stable and a lot of crew members grew attached to him. It’s funny because these bulls, they look violent when they are out doing their thing, but when they are in their pens, well, I can’t speak for all of them, but Rango was very kind. And he was very well taken cared for, you could tell.”

Without spoiling the movie for ya, and if you haven’t read the book, let’s just say that Rango and Scott Eastwood’s character share an exciting moment together towards the end.

Rango is set to have his own credit in The Longest Ride which will hits theaters on April 10, 2015.  In the meantime, PBR reports they will conduct a special tribute to Rango during the 2014 Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Oct. 22-26 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

One of the more popular bovine athletes on the PBR’s BFTS roster, Rango was a bull that riders were excited to face. A qualified 8-second ride on the 1,500-pound bull often meant a winning score. Rango last bucked on Sept. 6 at the Jack Daniel’s Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee, facing two-time PBR World Champion Silvano Alves in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round. The two teamed up for a score of 92.25 points which was enough to not only win the round, but also propel Alves to a second-place finish at the event. It is the second-highest score recorded this year, and was the most-watched video highlight on the PBR’s digital channels last week.

Appearing on the BFTS scene in 2011, Rango bucked off 63 of the 75 riders he faced in his four-year PBR career for a buckoff rate of 84 percent. He challenged many World Champions, including J.B. Mauney (2013), Alves (2012, 2011), Guilherme Marchi (2008) and Mike Lee (2004). His average ride score was 90 points – with the highest being the 92.25 points Alves received just one week ago; it was matched by Marco Eguchi in Albuquerque, New Mexico, earlier this year.

The upcoming film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks best-seller, “The Longest Ride,” which is centered on a fictitious PBR bull rider, also featured Rango. Fans will be able to see Rango in action in the film, which hits theaters on April 10, 2015.

The PBR will conduct a special tribute to Rango during the 2014 Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Oct. 22-26 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

“He will definitely be missed; he was just like one of the family,” said Robinson.

Rep. Tillis and Gov. Chris Christie sneak out back door to escape film supporters?

This morning on Market St between Front and 2nd, a total of 63 film supporters came out for a last minute mini-rally.  Not a bad turn out considering the rest of the folks are working. And what better place to hold one when the NJ Governor Chris Christie came into town to support the Koch Brothers’  funded Thom Tillis Campaign for US Senate.  We gathered and shared voting information, discussed which NCGA members are for and against our NC Film Incentives  (See Filmmakers voting guide – NCGA_FilmmakersVotingGuide_2014) and also to express our feelings about Thom Tillis showing up in Southeastern North Carolina to do some fundraising. As you know his campaign will fail without SENC on his side, and we will do everything we can to stop him.

When the cars came around in front of the Dixie Grill, Gov. Christie looked a little surprised at the crowd before him. Thom, not so much.  He’s got a good poker face. We gave them their respected breathing room and stood on the median 20 feet away. As media from Charlotte, Raleigh and, of course, Wilmington rolled their cameras and audio devices, the film supporters chanted, “Film =Jobs” until their vocal chords needed a rest.  As Tillis and Christie sashayed through the restaurant doors, a film truck rolled by with joyous honks to support those holding signs.

Meanwhile, Thom Goolsby snuck through the back door to get into the event.

While indoors they smiled and shook hands with their supporters, but the crowd moved on either side of the doorway, lining the curb and still chanting every few minutes.  As expected, Tillis said what we predicted he would say the minute he did his thing in the short session. “Well, I voted for film.”  When one knows the Senate won’t take it up, one can say anything he or she likes to look good.  Perhaps he shouldn’t have had his people whipping up votes against film the first time around!  I am not sure if he thinks we would not remember, or we are just plain dumb, but whatever the case, it was a nice effort on his part.  Bless his heart.

Knowing that we would not leave, it appeared that he chose to exit through the back door in order to avoid us like the plague as did Gov. Christie and Thom Goolsby. Is there any other explanation? Can’t think of any, either. We left the walkway clear for them to exit. I consider that quite a cowardice move, don’t you?

If you were unsure of what they really think about film in this state, you know now.  We have got to let them know just because you have billionaires in your back pocket, and “celebrity” politicians supporting you, doesn’t mean you will get elected.
