PRESS RELEASE: North Carolina Awards Three Film & Entertainment Grants

Press release from the North Carolina Department of Commerce:

North Carolina Awards Three Film & Entertainment Grants

Raleigh, N.C. – N.C. Commerce Secretary John E. Skvarla III and the Economic Development Partnership of N.C. announced three productions will receive funds from the North Carolina Film and Entertainment Grant program. Each recipient will begin production within the next 60 days.

“Two of our grantees are returning to film in North Carolina and that is exactly what we want- repeat business,” said Secretary Skvarla. “We want to continue long term relationships on both the big and small screen.”

The three-hour filmed musical event “Dirty Dancing,” the independent feature film “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and a new television event series “Shots Fired” will film in North Carolina. The three projects combined are expected to have direct in-state spending of more than $64.5 million while creating approximately 7,600 job opportunities in the state.

DebraMessingDirty Dancing is an adaption of the beloved 1987 hit romantic drama and instant movie classic, which was shot in part in North Carolina. Produced by Lionsgate Television in association with Allison Shearmur Production, the TV event—starring Academy Award-nominated actress Abigail Breslin (“Freak Show,” “Scream Queens,” “Little Miss Sunshine”) and Emmy Award-winning actress Debra Messing (“The Mysteries of Laura,” “Smash,” “Will & Grace”) and singer, dancer, actor Colt Prattes (P!nk’s music video “Try,” “Rock of Ages”)—will air domestically on ABC. The production will take place in the state’s western region, including Jackson and Buncombe Counties among other locations. The eligible grant amount is up to $4 million.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is an independent feature-length film about a small town mother who confronts the local police department as to why there are still no answers in regard to the death of her teenage daughter seven months ago. The production is being produced by the UK’s Blueprint Pictures in conjunction with Film4 and Fox Searchlight Pictures. It will also base out of the state’s western region with filming taking place in Jackson and Buncombe counties among other locations. The eligible grant amount is up to $3,106,772.

SanaaLathanShots Fired is a series from 20th Century Fox Television and Imagine Television that will base out of Charlotte. The series examines the dangerous aftermath of racially charged shootings in a small town and will star Sanaa Lathan (“The Perfect Guy,” “Love & Basketball”) as an expert investigator who digs into the cases, alongside a special prosecutor sent to the town by the Department of Justice, to seek justice before the divided town erupts. The eligible grant amount is up to $9 million

“North Carolina continues to be a choice location for a variety of projects and the latest recipients, who will join previously awarded productions in the Wilmington and Research Triangle areas, show that this industry is indeed statewide,” said Guy Gaster, director of the North Carolina Film Office within the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina. “In addition to job opportunities for many of our state’s highly-skilled film professionals, these projects will also help stimulate economic activity in the communities in which they film.”

The North Carolina Film and Entertainment Grant provides financial assistance to attract productions that will stimulate economic activity and create jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet direct in-state spending requirements to qualify for grant funds.

Why NC Film supporters in NHC must vote in the Primaries.

The primaries are coming up on March 15th and whether you are affiliated or unaffiliated with any party, I can tell you, it is crucial that we get the right representative in the NC House when it comes to NC Film. NC House District 20 is saying goodbye to Rick Catlin. Who will replace him?

There are two choices. None from the Democratic side. There are two Republicans that are running. Tammy Covil and Holly Grange. Catlin is rooting for Covil and from what I hear is going out with a bang when it comes to film.  I’ve heard from multiple sources that Catlin’s last hurrah is attempting to try to change the House members’ minds about NC Film.

The House was our friend last time around, it was the Senate that gave us most of the trouble. So, the last thing we need is less support from the NC House and it is CRUCIAL for you to vote in the upcoming primary. Why?

Because there are no Democrats running and two Republicans who are. Only one of which can win the primary. Whoever wins the primary will win the seat.

Holly Grange is our only hope who is extremely pro-film.

Covil, is NO FRIEND to NC Film. Let’s also not forget, now more than ever, we need more Republican support for NC Film.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are registered as an Independent or Unaffiliated, you can still vote in the primaries!

You will be asked which party you want to vote for. I personally will be choosing the Republicans this time around. There is too much at risk not to.

GO TO CANDIDATE LIST NOW

The One-Stop Absentee period for the 2016 Primary Election begins on Thursday, March 3, 2016 and ends on Saturday, March 12, 2016. To see the One-Stop voting schedule for the 2016 Primary, click here.

So please, if you support NC Film, get to the polls during the One-Stop period or on the day of March 15th! If you are able to vote in NC House District 20, please support Holly Grange.

Two more cast members for History Channel’s SIX.

Mornin’ and happy Thursday to ya Wilmywood! I’ve got one thing to say: HELLLLOOOOO BOYS!

So glad to see we got our hot Tric bartender back. Yep! Joe Manganiello (Owen for all the Tree Hill Fans) is back for our History Channel series, SIX! You’ve also seen him in True Blood. He’s playing Rip Taggert. Variety describes his character as “a onetime leader of the SEAL Team Six squad who now patrols an African village to protect its residents from Boko Haram.”

JoeManganiello

Kyle Schmid who you might know as the 470-year-old vampire Henry Fitzroy on Lifetime’s supernatural drama series Blood Ties, or as Henry on Syfy’s Being Human. Schmid will play Alex Caulder a witty, efficient, and philosophical soldier, a veteran Navy Seal and one of the key members of Seal Team Six. Family comes first for him, that is his Seal family. He’s loyal to his brothers and nothing more.

Inside OTH is announcing their One Tree Hill cast member confirmations between now and February 29th when tickets go on sale for the reunion taking place July 23 & 24 here in Wilmington. So far they have announced Hilarie Burton, Bethany Joy Lenz and Antwon “Skills” Tanner. Follow them on Twitter for further updates or visit InsideOTH.com

More projects for North Carolina? Here’s the scoop!

Happy Monday my NC Film peeps. A few things of note today and you know how it goes…things change in the biz every 5 seconds. But, here’s what stands at the moment.

LoganLermanThis one, I am not too sure about. PW is putting a feature film in North Carolina. No city is listed. It’s a drama thriller titled Rothchild.  It’s about a young man who hatches a murderous plot to inherit his family’s wealth. The LP is Frank Hildebrand. The film stars the 24 year old little hottie Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson, Noah) who’s been here before for Stuck In Love.  Someone mentioned to me it’s a possible SAG-indie, but I cannot confirm it. That is all I know about the flick. No confirmations to go on as of yet. It’s PW, so ya know, not the most reliable source.

SanaaLathanA couple of weeks ago we thought FOX was bringing us 24:Legacy, but they opted for LA. However, it looks like we might be getting a FOX show after all. Fox is reportedly bringing us the series for Shots Fired.  Charlotte, NC is listed as the location. This could be a great one as Brian Grazer is the producer behind it. It’s been hard to search for as it has gone by multiple names such as Indictment and the most recent Untitled Gina Prince-Bythewood Project. She is the writer/director on this project. The LP is Howard Griffith who has been here before. Sanaa Lathan is set to star. The story revolves around the blend of racial tension and police brutality. It’s supposed to be up and running in late March. Again, no confirmations as of yet.

And finally heading South of the border, the ABC pilot that Barbara D’Alessandro is line producing, The Death of Eva Sophia Valdez, was first thought to be shooting in Charleston, SC. However, I can now tell you they are filming in Myrtle Beach – much closer to home for those NC peeps working on the show! They start up March 11.

We shall see if any of these shows get confirmation! As soon as I know, I will keep you posted!

In the meantime, here’s some other links of interest from the local media.

What we were hoping for in the Charlotte area looks like a no-go. FOX’s 24: Legacy has decided that they will be shooting in Los Angeles. However, when one door closes…

Looks like we might have a $15M feature film heading to the Asheville area. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Yep that’s the title. Frances McDormand stars in the Martin McDonagh flick. Although not officially reported and it is not confirmed, I’ve been told Sam Rockwell is joining the cast. In a interview last year with The Guardian, McDonagh spoke about the storyline. “It’s about a 50-year-old woman whose daughter is murdered and she goes to war with the police in her home town…because she thinks they are more interested in torturing black people than getting justice.” Although the film is of the crime genre, I’ve heard there is a dark comedy element to it as well.  As soon as I get a confirmation on all of this, I will let you know!

And just in case you didn’t know, Barbara D’Alessandro is line producing the ABC pilot, The Death of Eva Sophia Valdez in Charleston, SC. Production begins in mid-March.

SIX is eligible for a grant amount of up to $7,215,671.
