One Tree Hill’s Hilarie Burton speaks up for NC Film

HilarieTo the North Carolina voters and legislators,

Please forgive me for not being able to attend this weekend’s film rally. I’m already signed up to attend the Olevolos2014 fundraiser for a One Tree Hill castmate – Bryan Greenberg – up in NYC. But I wanted to send along a message of support for the NC Film community as the State’s current incentive is up for discussion.

As a little girl from Virginia, my family made the commute to North Carolina each summer for various vacation adventures…Tweetsie Railroad, the Outer Banks, The Lost Colony, Chimney Rock…all nostalgic and fantastic destinations. But it was one summer in middle school, when my parents decided to venture a little further South, that I fell in love with a most unique location.

Wilmington. I remember it being a town covered in flowers and those low slung oak branches. Driving down Market St toward downtown, my father stopped at an old antique Car Museum. Parked out front were untouchable classics, all shining in the July heat (you know the haze I’m talking about!). We got out. Peeked in windshields. Got wildly excited over the little round windows on a 60-something T-Bird. And then we were invited inside where the “real gems” were parked.

Picture cars, the man called them. He started naming actors who had sat in the very automobiles we were looking at. Dustin Hoffman. I want to say, I remember him saying John Travolta’s name. Right now I couldn’t tell you all the names of those productions, or all the actors he listed. But in that moment, my little girl dreams of becoming an actress were within my grasp! I couldn’t believe movies were made here – a few hours from my home – and not in the far off hills of California.

That was in the early 90s. The car museum has been gone for quite some time. The place where we had lunch that day is now Halligan’s Pub in Lumina Station. But, the trees are still low slung, and it is still the place where magical movies are made.

A decade later I came back to Wilmington as a fortunate member of the Warner Bros. production, One Tree Hill. I had fancy picture cars of my own to drive this go-round! Over the course of my 7 years in NC, my brother Billy moved down from NY and became a production assistant. He has since worked his way up the ranks and is currently a 2nd assistant director. My parents left our life-long home in Virginia and moved to town, where my father works with Stevens Fine Homes building new communities and my mother is an agent at Re/Max. My brother John came to town, spending his summers as a bouncer at Level Five, and finally settling in Fayettville, working on film productions of his own. My youngest brother Conrad transferred to UNCW and was a DJ at Z1075 for years before moving to Raleigh.

Our entire family was brought down to the area by the film community. And so to me, family has always been at the core of my support for the NC Film Incentive. I have attended the little league games and birthday parties of crew-members’ children, and I have been privileged to consider these hard-working, immensely talented professionals my friends. I never forget that by keeping film in NC, we are allowing these men and women to be at home – not working in Atlanta or New Mexico or Miami – with their families.

It’s a business. So to erase sentiment from it, here’s the truth. Film’s benefit is it’s amazing ripple effect on our state. Consider that there are dozens of productions happening at any given time in NC. If just one production employs 100 people, those 100 people and their families are spending money living and contributing to the NC economy. Every day the production spends money renting space from local vendors, buying food from local vendors, putting out of towners up at local establishments. Commercials for NC-made productions become advertisements for tourism in the area, and a constant rotation of television and film ensures that there are always new reasons for folks to sight-see in NC.

I’ve seen abandoned buildings re-purposed, gardens planted, historic homes re-habbed. I’ve seen vacant lots turned into highly anticipated stops on the Wilmington Film Tour. I’ve seen actors come in and contribute to local charities, take part in parades and fundraisers, and fall in love with the area. And I’ve seen kids like that middle-school version of myself marvel that they are so close to the magic of filmmaking. It gives a person the ability to dream big in a small town.

After working all over the country, I’m proud to say that I too still marvel at the capabilities of the NC Film community. Speaking up about maintaining the incentive and continuing to support NC’s sterling reputation in the world of filmmaking is important to me, and I hope it will be important to you. It is with deep affection for a place that did so much to nurture me personally and professionally that I write this, and I very much look forward to my next opportunity to work in the area.

Humbly,
Hilarie Burton

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 04/30/2014 – RIP Shannon Rippy, Locations, Loomis Fargo, Lee Norris, NC Film Rally and more.

ShannonGood morning my loves. The morning began with sadness and our hearts are aching for those who knew and loved Shannon Rippy. Her body was discovered in Hampstead yesterday.  James Opelton Bradley, who has been convicted of murder in another county in 1990, is being held in the New Hanover County jail on a charge of first-degree murder. Bradley will make a court appearance 2 p.m. today. READ MORE NOW

Schedules might be changing due to the weather today, but here is where you might spot some action:

  • How and Why should be shooting at the 6th St bridge and driving around Roland Grise Middle School
  • The Sin Seer – Front St and 2nd St
  • Under the Dome is staying dry on the sound stages
  • Max Steel – Somewhere mysterious in the downtown area.

Yesterday, the news came out about our Christmas in Conway star, Andy Garcia, making his way back to Wilmywood for Max Steel!  A HUGE thank you to the production team.  Check out their slate!

https://twitter.com/stewarthendler/status/461526105477103616

Here’s a fun little tidbit.  For two days we will be having 5 productions running at one time, but it could possibly be 7 units shooting at once.  That is crazy and I love every minute of it!

FIN_Night

Now, I have been waiting, keeping my ears open about this one, but I have officially heard the same rumor three times now.  Word has it, Loomis Fargo might be heading west of the state to Asheville and only utilizing Wilmington for a few shots.  Now, this might be devastating to some, HOWEVER, if this does happen, it could be a really good thing.  Wilmington cannot have all the projects.  The more we spread the shows out, the more other counties see how good film is for their area.  Still waiting for more details, but that is all I know for now.  You know the film biz is a crazy biz, things change everyday.  I will keep you posted.

Andy Garcia joins Max Steel cast

andy_garciaAndy Garcia is back in Wilmywood! ( He was here in 2013 for Christmas In Conway.) He has signed on to play the role of “Miles” who is a friend of Max’s mother “Molly.”  Currently, Andy can be heard and not seen in the animated picture, Rio 2 as the voice of “Eduardo.” Rumor has it that Mr. Garcia has had some Wilmywood ties in the past couple of months. The Emmy award nominated actor was one of the leading men in the running for the lead role in the recently wrapped pilot, Field of Play. (We know it as REDZONE).

ABOUT :

MAX STEEL – MATTEL/DOLPHIN/OPEN ROAD
STATUS: Production begins April 29th
PRODUCERS: Bill O’Dowd,  Julia Pistor

CAST: Ben Winchell,  Ana Villafañe

16 year old Max McGrath is discovering that he’s got a strange electric energy that emanates from him when he’s upset or excited, and it’s starting to grow beyond his control. With his scientist father dead and his mom Molly unwilling to talk about what really happened in the accident that killed him, Max is resigned to trying to fit in to yet another new school–where he finds himself attracted to the quirky, independent-minded Sydney and develops a friendship with an old colleague of his dad’s, Miles Edwards. But the most startling thing that happens to Max is the arrival of a small, crab-like alien named Steel, whose memory may be faulty but who knows one thing for certain: he’s there to protect Max, and he’s been sent by Max’s father.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 04/29/2014 Max Steel, Wilmywood Pilots, CFIFF, Under the Dome, NC Film Rally

And so it begins!  Day one for Max Steel and they kick off their production at a local business and a local favorite, Indochine.

On the set of Under the Dome, Colin Ford got into an altercation…with a door.  He was a trooper about it after getting a couple of stitches yesterday. It briefly stopped production, but the UTD  team are pros and quickly went on to another scene while Colin got some TLC and he is now sporting a hot gauze headband and looking downright adorable as always.

Under the Dome is back in Burgaw today as well as the sound stages.

The count down is on.  6 days until Sleepy Hollow begins production!  Woo Hoo!  The stars are coming back into town and they are tellin’ the world!  Lyndie Greenwood, is one of those who are pumped about it, so much that she has the best auto-correct fail yet!

Wilmywood Pilot Updates

Upfronts

by April Vickery

Well, here we go folks! The moment of truth is coming. Upfronts are two weeks away and the fate of some network shows are no longer in the hands of the execs. It’s all in the hands of the people now.

The recently renamed pilot Field of Play (REDZONE) is currently being viewed by test audiences. Now, it looks as though CBS may not pick up more than 3 or 4 drama pilots this season. At least two of these shows will be a spin offs. Field of Play is one of the shows vying for one of those coveted spots! Have no fear though, if CBS does NOT pick up the Nikki Toscano pilot, another network can swoop in and nab it for themselves.  Time will tell.

Another Wilmywood pilot is going to be tested NEXT week:  ABC’s Secrets and Lies. Originally, the show had a 10 episode commitment, but sources say that commitment went to the way side, so it’s just as vulnerable as the other pilots in the mix. Sources say however, it’s a “strong contender for pick-up.”

As for How and Why, FX’s upfronts already  came and went (April 9th).  The show which is currently in production, won’t be complete until the end of May.  We should hear something about our Charlie Kaufman comedy by mid June at the earliest.
