THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/31/2013 BIG Rumors from the Lot, Upcoming Events and More

RumorslogoHappy New Year’s Eve!  The final day of the year.  Let’s get right to “Rumors from the Lot.” We’ve got three of them to discuss.  I got some good news and some bad news.  Which do you want first?  Yeah, I can never decide either, so let’s flip a coin.  Okay, tails it is.  The bad news.  Remember, these are strictly rumors and I cannot confirm at this point.

1) Max-SteelRUMOR: Max Steel.  Last week, while visions of offices opening danced through our heads, there has been a rumor going a round that they have pulled out of Wilmington and are going to shoot in another state.  I heard they already had a few contracts in place in Wilmington and withdrew in the past week. And no I didn’t hear Georgia or Louisiana.  I heard Connecticut.  Though I haven’t been told any reason for the possible move, I can tell you a little about the state’s incentives.

In Connecticut, production companies incurring expenses between $100,000 and $500,000 are eligible for a 10 percent credit, between $500,000 and $1 million are eligible for a 15 percent credit, and over $1 million are eligible for a 30 percent credit. For income years starting Jan. 1, 2010, the minimum expenditure increases to $100,000 and makes the credit amount dependent on the production’s total expenses or costs. The state also offers a tax credit for infrastructure costs, and exemptions for property, sales and hotel taxes.

Still, with all that being said, it could indeed just be a rumor and they could very well remain here. Still looking into this one.

0426bolden2mb2) RUMOR: Bolden!  We’ve heard this rumor before, but it has definitely made the rounds again.  The word is yet again, Bolden! might be headed to Atlanta.  When?  We don’t know, just as we didn’t know their definite start up date when they were still planning on shooting here.  I will keep you posted when I hear more details. Again, rumor, let’s hope they stay here.

Tv3) RUMOR: Production Companies Scouting.  While the first two rumors are major bummers, here is something that might cheer you up.  Word on the lot is we’ve had a couple of productions companies sniffing around Wilmington, looking for that ideal place to shoot some television pilots.  No word yet on exactly who, but as soon as I find out, I will let you know.

Now, what’s missing in this blog?  Jibber jabber about Sleepy Hollow.  It feels so weird to not report who is here in town and where they are shooting. Well, we can count on Under the Dome to fill that void soon enough.  But still, I am so sad to see them officially wrap season one. The last of the cast has gone home.  😦

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/30/2013 Under the Dome, Sleepy Hollow, Wilmywood Flicks Most Lucrative 2013

Good Morning and Happy Monday to ya!  A slew of praise happening as we finish out the year.  So, let’s continue that trend!  A lot of people were talking about this over the weekend. It wasn’t the top grossing movies, but the most successful ones that got the most bang for their buck and North Carolina has 4 on the list, three of which were shot right here in Wilmywood.  Here are the top 9 most lucrative movies of 2013, according to The Wrap: TheWrap - SuccessSo congrats to the cast and crew of: The Conjuring, Bad Grandpa, We’re the Millers and IM3!  Don’t know what ROI means?  It’s Return Of Investment.  The Wrap explains it in simple terms:

To calculate ROI for a movie, you take how much it grossed, subtract how much it cost and then divide that figure by how much it cost. For example, “Insidious: Chapter 2″ cost $5 million to make. It grossed $160.4 million. So here’s how we did it: $160.4M- $5M = $155.4M. $155.4M/$5M = 31.1.

CES2014Our beloved CBS series Under the Dome is among the honorees at Variety’s upcoming Breakthrough of the Year Awards, which will be held Thursday January 9th in Las Vegas at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).  Dean Norris will be on hand to accept the award. CES is the world’s largest electronics show.  It will attract more than 150,000 attendees and will have close to 3,000 exhibitors. It runs January 7th through the 10th.  READ THE STORY AT VARIETY.COM

I know stories similar to this one have already come out, but when our shows get kudos, you deserve to know. The Global Dispatch reports that due to Amazon’s $700,000 per episode buy,  it made the show profitable before it even aired. (The Amazon licensing deal partnership along with international rights made “Under the Dome” an insanely profitable enterprise, again, before it even aired. ) Because of these factors, the UTD team had less stress with how they crafted the show. Rachelle LeFevre said it best:

“There wasn’t as much pressure,” The CBS execs “were able to make big, ballsy decisions as a result, and success is what comes from that.”

Of course it didn’t hurt that the show was an instant hit.  It was the most watched summer series in more than twenty years.  Nielsen tallied up the live viewing as well as the DVR numbers and estimated that the show averaged 15+million viewers.  Amazon picked up season two, 9 months before it will air, 6 months before filming begins on season two.  That Amazon will continue with the same kind of licensing deal, exclusive domain for the online streaming of the episodes four days after they air.   READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE NOW!

SHWitchesNow onto our other successful television show that has made its home here in Wilmywood. Laurel Brown (@DocBrown_TVdid a great piece as part of Zap2It‘s Year in Review.  It was definitely the Year of the Witch. Laurel highlights some of the best of the best from this years television shows and suggests who could beat up who.  She leaves us with the question: “Will the “Sleepy Hollow” witches dominate 2014?” Awesome Laurel!  It’s a fun piece.  READ IT NOW.

And speaking of some great cast, Lyndie Greenwood says good-bye to Wilmywood:

Lyndie_GoodBye

Nicole Beharie also said good-bye over the weekend as well.  It looks like today just might be the last day of filming the EPIC season finale! Well, that’s the plan anyway! And sorry, I cannot reveal who is left filming.  Wouldn’t wanna spoil the finale for ya!  They never shoot in sequential order anyway, but I’d rather not accidentally give anything away.  We will just have to wait until January 20th to see who is left standing!1016242_434988879942442_1440392906_n

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/27/2013 – Fox’s Wild Blue, Sleepy Hollow Filming Today, and More.

Good Friday Morning Wilmywood!  As we get ready for the weekend, I definitely have something for you to chat about as a question popped up that needs to be answered.

What the hell happened to the naval drama that was supposed to shoot here?

AircraftCarrierRemember the Fox pilot we talked about ages ago?  I believe it was in May we first caught wind of Wild Blue.  Yeah, that long ago.  This pilot would have had one of the biggest budgets in history for its pilot, reaching $15 million.  They called on department heads and cast the show.  Everything was good to go. They were literally a day away from building the air craft carrier here in the Wilmywood area. Then, they decided to do another rewrite. Then…Nothing.  And there has been nothing said for seven months.  So what the hell happened?  No, it didn’t move to Georgia or Louisiana, it just kinda fizzled out.

Nellie over at Deadline, gives us more insight:

Nellie_DeadlineFox had been very interested in getting a naval drama on the air — last season it bought a second script with a similar setting, from House executive producers Russel Friend & Garrett Lerner and 20th Century Fox TV, which also took place on a naval aircraft carrier and had an upstairs/downstairs dynamic. In the end, one of the two, The Bridge, renamed Wild Blue, was picked up to pilot in January. The pilot cast most of its roles, bringing in Mykelti Williamson, Josh Salatin, Will Rothhaar, Alano Miller and Gina Rodriguez. But the older lead remained uncast, with Tim McGraw, who was the top choice, engaging in conversations but ultimately walking away.

It looks like Sleepy Hollow is the King of “Best Of” lists.  Yep, more kudos for our headless show.  3 more to chat about.  Let’s start with what our friend and NC crew member Darla passed along.  Actually, Under the Dome and Sleepy Hollow both made this list!

Variety_Rookie

Variety’s Rick Kissell (@ratesrick) summarizes:

“Five Rookies Among Primetime’s Top-Rated Series of 2013 NBC’s “The Blacklist,” ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” and Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” were the standout newcomers this fall, making the top 25 along with a pair of shows that bowed earlier in the calendar year: Fox’s “The Following” in January and CBS’ “Under the Dome” in June.

Next up is TVLine.com.  Another Best of 2013 list.  Our lovely Ashlea over at WECT reported that Sleepy Hollow tied with Kevin Spacey’s House of Cards in the category of Best New Fall Drama on a list compiled by TVLine.com.  READ ASHLEA’S STORY NOW

TVLINE

And finally Hunter from the Star News found this one from EW.  This time it’s more specifically geared toward Tom Mison, naming him one of the Breakout Stars of 2013.  EW puts our Brittish hottie-tottie at #7 on their list.

EW_TomMison

SG10A few of the Sleepy Hollow folks are in town finishing up the big finale which will air January 20th.  @TomMinsonFans will be happy to know that both Tom and Nicole are back in town.  They are filming on the lot today.   The 2-hour, episode 12/13 combo airs at 8pm EST.  And remember episode 11 entitled “Vessel” airs January 13th at 9pm EST.  They shoot from tomorrow until at least the end of the year.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY 12/26/2013 – Under the Dome, Sleepy Hollow and More.

Good morning! I hope you had an amazing Christmas with the ones you love! Let’s see what we have for the day.  We’ll start off with some Colin Ford love and some Under the Dome adoration.

fanshare

I would like to thank FanShare.com for siting my interview with Colin Ford on the set of Under the Dome in their article from December 23rd.  The article states that Colin Ford is definitely one “young actor to watch.”  We agree Fanshare!  Thanks for posting.

According to TV Canada, their “Top Draws in Canada in 2013”  include Under the Dome, putting them in the top 5, eh?

The Amazing Race Canada was the top draw, with an average audience of 3.5 million. The Big Bang Theory was second, with 3 million viewers, and The Amazing Race 22 and 23 third with 2.5 million viewers. Under the Dome (2.43 million) and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D(2.41 million) round out the top 5.

I thought this letter from “Ichabod Crane” aka @NoFirstIShotHim that Nick Gonzalez retweeted was quite wonderful.  Another lovely letter of thanks to the cast and crew of Sleepy Hollow.

Looking into the new year, it’s looks like Wilmywood will be quite busy, so let’s review about what we’ve been talking about over the last six weeks.
  • Mattel’s Max Steel will be the first out of the gate for 2014, with offices opening in January, production beginning in February.
  • Not far behind will be the return of Under the Dome, opening offices in January as well, but production won’t begin until March.
  • Bolden! is still slated to reopen offices in January, but no definitive dates set for production.
  • Next slated to hit the town is up in the air as we have Loomis Fargo, and the return of Sleepy Hollow for Season Two in mid to late spring.  No solids dates as of yet.
  • The Legend of McCoy Mountain & The Gold 45 Revolver is also still up in the air for this spring as well, but we don’t know where in NC they will be filming yet, so can’t put this one in the Wilmywood bucket quite yet.

The Sleepy folks got to rush home for the holidays.  They will resume working on the EPIC finale of Sleepy Hollow on Friday.  My production sources told me they plan on shooting at least until the 30th.  Over the weekend, I decided to write a ‘lil ode to the cast and crew.  If you haven’t seen it or heard it (yes, I did a live read on the air, couldn’t resist), CHECK IT OUT NOW!

A Sleepy Hollow Christmas

Sleepy-Hollow-Title

LISTEN NOW VIA PODCAST

TO THE CAST AND CREW OF SLEEPY HOLLOW:

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the lot,
creatures still stirring, til every scene was shot.
The horsemen galloped to the cemetery with care,
in hopes that Ichobod Crane soon would be there.

The film crew wished they were all snug in their beds,
while visions of a day off danced in their heads.
And Alexis in her ‘kerchief, and Darwin in his cap,
just knew this Christmas, there’d be no long winter’s nap.

On the roof of Stage 10, the crew heard such a clatter,
Jefferson yelled out, “Hey, fly out that ladder!”
Away to the window for a set dec redo,
Sullivan opened the shutter, “Hey look, it’s unit two.”

The moon was up, the cast and crew ready,
“Let’s do this!” exclaimed DP John Leonetti.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but Headless himself and an ax quite near.

The shot was well done, on to wardrobe real quick,
Geneveive gets them to Screen Gems in a fast lick!
More rapid than eagles, his coursers they came,
Ken Olin whistled and shouted and called them by name:

“Now Mison! Now Beharie!
Now, Gonzalez and Cho!
On, Winter! On, Greenwood!
On, Stenberg and Jones!
To the top of the set!
To the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away!
Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before Greens made fly,
“Too much crunching noise, Rebecca” said Michael, the sound guy.
So off to North 3rd St, all of them flew,
with trucks full of gear, Cinema Catering too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof,
it was Beavis’ effects that went BOOM and POOF!
As Iscove and Blake turned scripts out and around,
down Princess Street Tom Mison came with a bound.

He was dressed perfectly vintage, from head to toe,
and hair and make up, nailed it, ready to go!
The bundled up crew was so cold in the night,
“Action” was called, yep they got it right!

The crew, they slaved, but were all still merry,
their cheeks were like roses, their noses like cherries!
Sixteen hours in, almost done for the day,
but was the finale done?  Nope, just part way!

Back at the office, they had paperwork miles long,
Lisa and Hope made sure nothing was wrong.
Josh and Stacee had so much to do,
Karen and Shannon’s list grew and grew.

Hartley worked hard like a jolly old elf,
“Gotta stay on budget,” he sternly said to himself.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
soon gave FOX word they had nothing to dread.

Sleepy Hollow fans eager, ready for more,
waiting for January is too much to endure.
So they watched again, oh yes, they replayed,
the 13th and 20th their next special days.

“Cast and crew, we love you!” We exclaimed, we yelled.
“You deserve more kudos then we can possibly tell!”
So, with that being said, before we turn off the lights,

“Happy Christmas from Wilmywood, and to all a good night!”

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/20/2013 Another Movie for NC, Eric Laden, Encore’s Best Of and More!

gold45revolverWriter/Producer Elliot McGucken is taking his award winning screenplay, “The Legend of McCoy Mountain & The Gold 45 Revolver” to the silver screen, and my sources tell me as it stands, they will be shooting this flick in LA, New York and North Carolina.  I am still waiting to hear back on exactly where in NC they will be filming.  Let’s hope their plans don’t change! The movie is about Mary McCoy and her boyfriend who head on up McCoy Mountain to film the ghost of Civil War abolitionist Johnny Ranger McCoy for Mary’s Sundance documentary.  They end up finding out firsthand if Johnny’s Gold 45 Revolver really does fire lightning in the hands of heroes willing to give that last, full-measure of devotion.  Look for this production to start up in the Spring.

Remember the indie flick Riverguard that shot here this past summer?  Eric Ladin, the lead in the Wilmywood shot movie has been cast as a regular in The Brink, HBO’s pilot directed by Jay Roach from a script by Roberto Benabib and Kim Benabib and exec produced by Jerry Weintraub. The Brink is an epic dark comedy focusing on a geopolitical crisis and its effect on three disparate and desperate men: U.S. Secretary of State Walter Hollander (Tim Robbins); Alex Coppins (Jack Black), a lowly Foreign Service officer; and Zeke Callahan (Pablo Schreiber), an ace Navy fighter pilot. Ladin will play Lieutenant Glenn Taylor, Callahan’s ace wingman.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/19/2013 Letters to the Gov’na, Sleepy Hollow Not Done Yet and More!

Hey!  Happy Thursday!  Hope you are in the Holiday spirit.  Tis the season for giving back!  I have an idea for you.  Here’s a way you can help the community, and well, the state for that matter!

euesgsThe lovely Susan Dosier who does PR for Screen Gems Studios put out a blog post yesterday asking you for a small favor that will only take 5 minutes of your time! As you know, a couple of days ago, the Gov sent out a press release and made this statement:

“In addition to our state’s beauty, we’ve developed the workforce and artists that make North Carolina an ideal place to produce quality projects efficiently.”

Now is the time to keep the support strong and thank McCrory for his actions, letting him know we agree.  Susan said in her blog, “Please ask your colleagues, friends and family to send a note of appreciation directly to Governor McCrory’s press office before the end of the year.”  SEE DETAILS NOW  Seriously, 5 minutes of your time will help greatly!

Sleepy Hollow of course is one of our favorite shows, but it’s getting kudos from more than just the locals!  WECT sites a Time Magazine writer as a fan of the show.  James Poniewozik puts Sleepy Hollow on his top 10 list.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/18/2013 – Variety Helps Spread the Message, Hank and Jed, PCAs and more…

Howdy and Happy Hump Day! Yesterday was a fun-filled crazy day for film blogging. Not, one, not two, but three were posted as so much was going on.  I will recap and add some goodies this morning!

Yesterday on the Wilmywood Daily Facebook page, I deemed these folks as the Best NC Film Family ever! Hilarious! This Raleigh, NC Family has got more than 6 million views since last week! If you haven’t seen this video yet, you will LOVE it!

ncFLAGThe Governor’s office sent out a press release yesterday.  Film and Television Production spent at least $254 Million in North Carolina this year. That’s direct in state spending folks!  It’s been one the most successful years in NC Film history. The release stated that production companies generated more than 4,000 “well-paying” crew positions and nearly 25,000 job opportunities, including talent and background extra positions. There were more than 5,700 production days in more than 30 counties this year. READ PRESS RELEASE NOW

keepncA lot of people read this press release and liked what was included, but many were more intrigued about what was not included:  the reason for such high direct in state spending. The 25% film incentive.  An interesting omission, indeed.  Perhaps they thought is was a given?   The economic impact numbers help make our case that the incentives should not end on Jan. 1, 2015.  Regardless, we will continue the push until the big vote in May.

Ted-Johnson-VarietyI wanted to thank Ted Johnson, the senior editor for Variety for bringing this message to Hollywood.  Did you know that some people in LA think that our incentives don’t even exist anymore?  Crazy.  Production Companies and studios need to know that North Carolina is still very much a viable option.  So, thanks Ted, I think this article will be a big help.  READ HIS ARTICLE NOW

Variety also brings us this wonderful news about our NC shot  Homeland. The  season finale pulled in its largest audience to date.  READ ARTICLE NOW!

Our local production company Hank and Jed Movie Pictures spilled the beans.  They are featured in the popular video game, Battlefield 4.  Due to Hank and Jed’s hugely successful web series, Battlefield Friends, EA and DICE, the makers of the game, became fans of the show and contacted them to be in the game.  Brent Triplett, Jon Etheridge, Tony Schnur and Nate Panning recorded at Post 1200, a post-production facility here in Wilmington, NC.  READ STORY NOW
