Under the Dome says goodbye after Season 3

After careful consideration, CBS has decided to end the run of our sci fi show Under the Dome. The season finale will air September 10th.

We thank the network for giving our crew members jobs, our small businesses cash flow, and we will always consider the cast members family.

Thanks for a good run.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 08/31/2015 NC Film booms Box Office, NC CD picks up GA job, TNT in Wilmywood

As Box Office Mojo put it, War Room was the story of the weekend!

On Friday, the North Carolina shot (Cabarrus/Mecklenburg counties) faith-based film War Room claimed the #1 spot beating Straight Outta Compton, a feat bigger budget films could not accomplish. War Room took in $4,045,000, on Friday while Compton garnered $3,850,000. In the end however, Straight Outta Compton won the top spot with $13.2M vs War Room with $11M.

Box Office Mojo has more on the story..

Warroom2“Sony’s faith-based film from their Affirm division flew so far under the radar that it didn’t even get a Cinemascore. But it nearly stole Compton’s title and, at the same time, became the biggest hit for the Kendrick brothers, director Alex Kendrick and his writer/producer brother, Stephen. Their modestly-budgeted flicks have a great return on investment. War Room has a reported budget of $3.5M while their 2011 police officer film, Courageous, had a $2M budget, going on to a domestic cume of $34.5. Their 2008 fireman flick, Fireproof, had a $33.5M domestic cume on a budget of $500K.” READ MORE NOW

AdrenalineNow some of those actors who are in War Room are also starring in this NC shot flick. Adrenaline is showing at Mayfaire’s Regal Cinemas on September 8th 7:30pm. There are only a handful of tickets left. The Adrenaline Barracuda and Chevy Nova will be on display the night of the screening, and you get to hang with the actors!  Get tickets here: https://www.tugg.com/events/30590.  NOTE: Joseph Simpkins says that you cannot show up at the theater and buy your tickets, only through the TUGG link above.

tumblr_static_chris-evans-v_a7431_1_png_640x480_upscale_q90Jobs are slim pickins these days in North Carolina if you are a crew member and many are heading out to as far as Illinois, but Georgia seems to be the most popular location. And that includes casting directors. Although she is not moving, which makes it very difficult when you are a single mother of 3 kids, you gotta go where the work is.
The latest production our lovely local lady, Marty Siu of Marty Siu Casting, is working on is in Savannah, GA.

“I’ll be doing extras casting for the new movie in Savannah, called, Gifted, starring Chris Evans,” says Marty. “It starts filming Oct 7th. Folks can tune in to my website tomorrow for details.”

If you are in the area and would like to work on the flick, head to Marty’s Facebook page.  Congrats on the job girl, but we wish you could stay here!

blakecrouchICYMI: TNT’s Good Behavior is gearing up for pre-production and should be opening offices this week at EUE/Screen Gems. North Carolina Natives bring two productions to the state.

Although there is still no official word from the NC Commerce Dept or the NC Film Office in regards to who indeed got the Dirty Dancing money ($4M), I am still pretty damn certain of at least two out of the three projects that are coming to North Carolina to begin production in October, and we have some North Carolina natives to thank!

First up, TNT’s pilot Good Behavior. It’s already in pre-production on the LA side of things, but from what I’ve heard, offices should open up at EUE/Screen Gems in the next week or so.  For all you Downton Abbey and Wayward Pines fans, you will be quite pleased!  The series is based on the Letty Dobesh books by Wayward Pines author and North Carolina boy, Blake Crouch! We are so proud to welcome him back home!!  He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and he is “excited to be back.”

Good Behavior is written by both Crouch and Chad Hodge. They will serve as executive producers for the show as well.

The show will star Michelle Dockery who you know as Lady Mary Crawley of Downton Abbey.  She will play Letty Dodesh.

The storyline is about “a thief and a con artist whose life is always one wrong turn, one bad decision from implosion — which is exactly how she likes it. Fresh out of prison, Letty is attempting to stay afloat, but when she overhears a hit man being hired to kill a man’s wife, she sets out to derail the job, putting her on a collision course with the killer and entangling them in a dangerous and seductive relationship.”  Good Behavior should begin production in early October.

danny-mcbride-jody-hillNext up, let’s welcome back Danny and Jody as they bring us the father/son flick The Legacy Of A Whitetail Deer Hunter. The feature stars Josh Brolin and Danny McBride and the storyline revolves around a nationally known deer hunter who takes his son on a hunting trip. Danny and his partner in crime Jody Hill are the writers and executive producers. The project is coming from Scott Rudin Productions and Rough House. Jody Hill will be directing.  Lila Yacoub is listed as the LP. The PM is Georgie Marquis. Currently, Asheville, NC and Georgia are listed as locations, but I have a feeling it will be shot JoshBrolinsolely in Asheville. From what I have been hearing, they have already been in contact with some members of the film community and could be opening offices in the next week or so. Production should begin mid to late October.

Jody is a North Carolina boy, born in Concord. He and Danny both graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem.

McBride and Hill are currently shooting the HBO series Vice Principals in Charleston, SC.  If you remember they wanted to film that show here and had already scouted all the locations.  But when the NCGA screwed up our film incentives, they headed to SC. Before that, they brought HBO’s Eastbound and Down to Wilmywood.

So yea, I am pretty damn certain these two projects got the Dirty Dancing cash.  Now onto the uncertain third.  You can label this one a “Rumor from the Lot,” but I am hearing rumblings about a reality show picking up some cash as well. Some are saying it is Figure 8 Films, others have no idea, but “Reality Show” is what I keep hearing. I will keep you posted and let you know if there is any truth to this one. If that is indeed true, I am trying to figure out why. Reality Shows only hire about 10 NC film crew members. Maybe they had a small amount of cash left? Maybe someone’s got a friend in high places? Maybe none of this has any validity. We shall see…

Stay tuned!

NC Film ‘Ashby’ to hit theaters September 25, 2015

Starring Nat Wolff, Mickey Rourke, Emma Roberts and Sarah Silverman, the feature film Ashby is making its way to select theaters on September 25th.  It will also be up on iTunes on the same day. The film had its world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival on April 19th. Ashby was filmed in the Charlotte, NC area last summer. The NC Film Office reports that production lasted a little more than 80 days in the state.

Awkward Ed Wallis (Nat Wolff) moves to a new town with his single mom (Sarah Silverman) and needs help fitting in. Brainier than his peers, Ed figures playing high school football might be good way to make more friends, but his only new friend Eloise (Emma Roberts) thinks it’s odd. When Ed gets an assignment to write an essay about someone from an older generation, he introduces himself to his neighbor Ashby Holt (Mickey Rourke) and the two embark on an unlikely, immediate friendship. Ashby’s style of tough love takes some getting used to but, over time, Ed learns a lot from Ashby, including how to be courageous… which is very much needed when he learns his new best friend is a former CIA assassin.

‘Under the Dome’ and ‘Reckless’ Costume Dept. Sale this Thursday

In addition to  the Sec Dec and Prop Sale for Under the Dome, there will be a wardrobe sale as well. This sale is ONE DAY only and it is from both CBS shows, Under the Dome and Reckless.

The sale will be open to the public on Thursday, August 27th from 10am-5pm at EUE/Screen Gems Studios, 1223 N 23rd St., at the Costume Department Warehouse 17 & 18.

TV pilot with a Durham, NC story-line heads to Vancouver.

News is starting to come out in regards to the unused Dirty Dancing cash. ($4m). It looks like NBC will not be shooting the pilot, The Wilding (Tim Kring) in North Carolina though through no fault of their own. NBC was among 16 other productions who applied for the unused portion of the previous grant money. I’ve been unofficially told they were turned down. The supernatural drama’s storyline is based in Durham, NC. A perfect match, wouldn’t you think?

From what I’ve been hearing, NBC is very disappointed in this decision as they have already invested in this state with the previous show Surface (Season 1) and the pilot they shot in early 2014, Red Zone. They are repeat customers who have spent more than $50M in North Carolina.

NBC will sadly be taking the pilot to Vancouver.

As stated before in my earlier blog, this is an NBC production shooting for the USA Network. And you know how USA operates. If they see a show doing well, they will order multiple seasons! Just look at Burn Notice and White Collar.

This project would have used the statewide crew base and these are exactly the type of productions that the legislators wanted: long term productions that showcase the state. So, this is quite baffling. I don’t know all specifics, so I can’t say much at the moment.

It is safe to say however if the state budget was not 7 weeks overdue and the NC Film Grant was replenished, The Wilding would have called Wilmywood their home.

The pilot would have created 135 jobs and used 80 businesses across North Carolina.

As for the series, they don’t have to stay in Vancouver, they could shoot it anywhere. Let’s hope it will be here (trying to be optimistic).

Official details should be coming out within the next 7 days which productions applied and which were awarded the grant. I’ll keep you posted.

NOTE FOR NBC – IF YOU ARE READING THIS, PLEASE NOTE: WE DEFINITELY WANT YOU HERE!

Are these projects coming to North Carolina?

The deadline to apply for some of that Dirty Dancing money that went unused ($4M) was August 7th.

Although there has been no official statement, out of the 17 productions who applied, I have been hearing things. You know how that goes. I can’t officially tell you for sure if these projects got approved and accepted the grant money, but I can tell you they applied.  You know how things go in the biz, things change every 5 minutes. But, lemme tell ya what the buzz is all about.

First up, TNT could be bringing us the pilot, Good Behavior, a one hour drama.

And for all you Downton Abbey and Wayward Pines fans, you will be quite pleased if they film here!  The series is based on the Letty Dobesh books by Wayward Pines author Blake Crouch.  Good Behavior is written both Blake Crouch and Chad Hodge.

Fresh out of prison, Letty is attempting to stay afloat, but when she overhears a hit man being hired to kill a man’s wife, she sets out to derail the job, putting her on a collision course with the killer and entangling them in a dangerous and seductive relationship.”

JoshBrolinAlso applying for the Dirty Dancing cash is the father/son flick The Legacy Of A Whitetail Deer Hunter. If they got approved they would be heading to the Asheville area.  The feature stars Josh Brolin and Danny McBride. Danny and his partner in crime Jody Hill are the writers and executive producers. The project is coming from Scott Rudin Productions and Rough House. Jody Hill will be directing.  They also looked at Georgia for locations as well, so will they take the money or head south?

Both project are slated to begin in October.

UPDATE ON STORY BELOW: READ NOW!

Now I don’t think there is anymore money until the state budget is finalized and the NC Film Grant is replenished. With that being said, remember that 2nd pilot I was telling you about? I know they applied, but I don’t know if they got it or not. If they didn’t, I am really hoping they will reapply. It’s called The Wilding and it’s another supernatural project from Tim Kring.  You know, the Crossing Jordan/Heroes guy!

This is an NBC production shooting for USA Network. And you know how USA operates. If they see a show doing well, they will order multiple seasons! Just look at Burn Notice and White Collar.

Now the cool part!  The NBC project was specifically written for North Carolina, most of it in Durham. When does a North Carolina city get the chance to play itself? It’s rare!

The supernatural drama gives us the storyline about a group of “disparate families who realize they are enduring the same haunting in Durham, North Carolina. As parents turn against their children, one fractured family realizes they have the potential to save their neighbors. The mother, a psychiatrist, learns to help her daughter whose condition is indefinable by modern medicine.”

This project would use the statewide crew base. These are exactly the type of productions that the legislators want. Long term productions that showcase the state.

So, now we wait for the official word which should be any day now.

Whoever didn’t get the Dirty Dancing money will have to reapply when the film grant is refilled IF there is any change in the language when the budget comes out (with a number we don’t know yet). There will be projects that just can’t wait and will go to other states, but there will be some who will.  Then there will be those applying for the first time.

All we can do at this point is hold our breath until the budget comes out –  you know that thing that is 7 weeks overdue. SIGH.

As soon as the official word comes out about what’s coming to NC for real-zees, I will let you know 🙂

VIDEO: Under the Dome tours come to an end at EUE/Screen Gems Studios

The last weekend of the Under the Dome Tours at EUE/Screen Gems Studios was this past weekend.  Production on season 3 of Under the Dome wrapped  a little over a week ago. And now with the news that came out two weeks ago that the show would not return to Wilmington if they get picked up for another season, this was the final opportunity for folks to go behind the scenes and visit the sets on the sound stages.

Wilmywood Daily correspondent Charles Roark has the story.

So when will tours resume?  EUE/Screen Gems Studios Executive Vice President Bill Vassar says, “As soon as we have another series with a lot of public interest, we will resume tours.”

So now it all comes down to what our legislators put together in the state budget which is already seven weeks overdue. However, today the House and the Senate did agree on a $21.735 billion spending compromise for the entire state budget. It was a House difference of $415 million less and Senate difference of $265 million more. Now that they have a number, things will be moving more rapidly.  We should find out hopefully in the next week what they will put in the NC Film Grant for the next two fiscal years.
