First Project for Wilmywood 2018 Has Arrived.

Hope on the Horizon / Rumors from the Lot

It’s been a hot minute since the last blog post and well, you know why that is. Besides Season 2 of TNT’s Good Behavior shooting here, there’s not much action film-wise in the Port City. However, it looks like a change (or more like a return) could be right around the corner.

This week, EUE/Screen Gems Studios sent out the news to over 1300 production companies that you can count Wilmywood in for their next production. The email stated that effective immediately, North Carolina has committed to long term, recurring funding which provides grants equal to 25% of the North Carolina qualifying expenditures.

As of July 1, 2017, we have $33.6 million in funding available. On July 1, 2018 we will have $31 million in yearly recurring funding.

Executive Vice President at EUE/Screen Gems Studios, Bill Vassar, thanked our local legislators for having the vision to make changes in the incentive grant to make us more competitive down the road. “This is really hopeful,” he said. “As this has been developing with the legislators and word has gotten out that something was going to change, that there would be positive changes in the incentive, we’ve had an increase of interest of people coming here to shoot.”

Nothing is set in stone at this point. I know that’s the last thing you want to hear. And Bill couldn’t give me specifics to share, so you know how I do. I rely on other sources. So what’s the latest “Rumors from the Lot?”

I am not going to mention specific names of shows cuz, let’s be frank, I’d get in some deep doo-doo. But I can say, there’s a pilot, two television series and a feature that I know for sure are at least considering Wilmywood as their home. The operative word is CONSIDERING. Again, nothing set in stone.

Now I’ve got mixed reports about a project heading to Charlotte. Some people tell me they are gearing up to start in a couple of weeks. Does that mean opening offices in two weeks or start production in two weeks? That, I don’t know. Regardless, I am still marking this as a rumor for now.

I did some digging and last month, it was mentioned that a feature called We Were Liars was going to film in New York and North Carolina. Production was set to begin in August. So, that could indeed be it. If you’ve got more details on this one, holla!

That’s all I’ve got for now. I know it’s not much, but it sure is something to be hopeful about!

As soon as I get more details, I’ll let you know!

BoldenMore news about BOLDEN!  Looks like the indie flick will be opening offices again very soon.  THEY MEAN IT THIS TIME! Though they do not have an official schedule yet,  I heard they will resume production at the end of the summer/early fall.  AND I heard there offices are all the way out in Rocky Point.  Crazy, right?  No word yet who will be replacing Anthony Mackie for the lead role.  And who knows, maybe he will come back to the project…we will find out soon enough.

Kristen WiigThe indie flick, THE HEART from Indian Paintbrush Productions is coming to North Carolina.  Now, I know they have been checking us out here in Wilmywood, but I cannot confirm they will be filming here…yet!  Regardless, North Carolina will see a great cast!  Kristen Wiig, Sam Rockwell and we would welcome back Allison Janney! Wiig will star as a cash-strapped woman who agrees to transport black market organs with a man she just met, to be played by Rockwell. They want to get started ASAP, so we should know the rest of the details and exact location VERY soon!  Producing is Steven Rales, Mark Roybal, Kevin J. Walsh and Nora Skinner.  Nat Faxon & Jim Rash are writing and directing.

Zach GalifianakisUNTITLED ARMORED CAR PROJECT (aka LOOMIS FARGO) has named their Line Producer. It’s our LP from SAFE HAVEND. Catherine-hardwickeLast night, one of my rumors from yesterday morning got a confirmation.  AGE OF MIRACLES will be indeed shooting in North Carolina, now I am waiting for a Wilmywood confirmation. I do know Wilmington was in the finals for them.  Hopefully, I will have that by the end of the day.  We shall see!

sofia-vergaraFor about a month now I’ve heard from three different sources the mention of BIG SEXY, but no one knew much about it.  Seriously, they would say ‘I am hearing Big Sexy’ and I was like, ‘what about it?’ and they were like, ‘I dunno.’  Well, I found out yesterday that it’s a feature from Red Granite Pictures and it stars Sofia Vergara and Pierce Brosnan. I have no idea if this will shoot here, but keep your ears peeled cuz that name keeps popping up.  If you hear anything, lemme know!

How Film Affects Our Community – Graham’s Barber Shop (Under the Dome)

GrahamsBarberShopIn 2013, April Vickery was working as a security guard on set at 5th St. for Sleepy Hollow. The catering truck and crew parking were in the lots on either side of Graham’s Barber Shop at 5th & Castle. April was on foot patrol covering both areas so she passed the shop numerous times during the day. The owner of the shop, Mr. William Graham,  came out and made conversation with her. At the time he had returned from a trip from Nashville. He visited Graceland with his family and commented on how smart he felt that Elvis’ widow had been to invest in properties around the original home to make Graceland happen. He commented about the amount of work that Graceland brought into the town and how it helped improve the community not only with work but a sense of pride that they were all part of something so big.

He also spoke about Wilmington very fondly and has been here for many years (52 years in business). He said he hoped that more productions would come to town and he hoped that people realize how good it was for us to embrace the changes productions make for us.

Meanwhile, during this same time period, the executive producer of Under the Dome, Jack Bender, spotted that very barber shop.

CAM00011~2“Since our first year on Under the Dome,” Jack remembers, “when I saw this small barber shop in town I went, ‘We have to have a town barber who has to be a character.’ So I was talking to Neal (Baer)and Brian (K. Vaughn) about it and they went, ‘Yeah yeah… Big Jim (Dean Norris) goes there. Could be his confidante.’  So finally, Dwight Yoakam wanted to do the show and they said, ‘We’ll make him the barber.’ So we went to this gentleman’s barber shop, but he had a bright red floor with red walls and I said, ‘We can’t have a red floor. The floor is too red. It’s too bloody.  See if he’ll let us do a black and white check classic barber shop floor.'”

But they didn’t stop there.  They basically did a soft remodel. New floors, new sinks, repainted the cabinets, the walls. Everything!

I asked a Wilmington Crew Member who is currently working on the show about the redo.

“The other day when we (film crew) were working at the barber shop, I talked to the owner and the owner was thrilled that he got the new floor. The crew offered to change it back to red when the show was over, but some customers came in and saw the checkered floor all shiny and waxed and said, ‘Don’t you dare let them take that floor up! You need to keep that floor!’ So, he decided that since his patrons are absolutely in love with the new remodeled floor, he is going to keep it. The soft remodel of his entire barber shop was at no cost to him. He is elated and he even had a couple of politicians that come in to get their haircut that told him, ‘You need to write your senators and local representatives and tell them your story.’ Mr. Graham said that he was going to be on the phone calling them later that day.  It’s nice to see a small business not only get a paycheck (for location use) and a beautiful redo for free, but his barber shop will be immortalized on a Stephen King project and people will come there just to get their hair cut at the barbershop that Lyle (Dwight Yoakam) worked at in Chester’s Mill.”

This is just one of many stories to come how NC Film affects our NC communities.  Got a story to share? Let us know!  Email: sheila_brothers@yahoo.com

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 04/02/2014, HUGE Rumors From the Lot, Loomis Fargo, Secrets & Lies, Age of Miracles, Impact Study

WUIW

Good God!  An explosive amount of news came out yesterday!  I don’t know where to even begin!  Hmmm, let’s start with the fun stuff!  AND NOW IT’S TIME FOR [INSERT BILLOWING ECHO-Y VOICE] RUUUUMMOOOORS FROM THE LOT!

RumorslogoIf you remember back in the blog for Marth 17th, I reported that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke was here scouting,  but I had no idea which of the 5 projects in development she was working on next.  Well, I did some more digging and put my ear to the ground.  It looks as though she was here for AGE OF MIRACLES.  The film is based on the Karen Thompson Walker best-Catherine-hardwickeselling novel of the same name. Seth Lochhead (Hanna) has adapted the screenplay. River Road Entertainment’s Bill Pohlad will produce. According to a press release announcing Catherine’s attachment to the project (over a year ago mind you) Age of Miracles is set amidst an advancing catastrophe after the Earth’s rotation mysteriously slows. It’s a suspenseful and romantic snapshot of one young girl’s adolescence, a poignant family drama, and a heartrending glimpse into the everyday tragedies and triumphs that define what it is to be human in a world that might just be ending.  As for details, well my sources tell me that it is indeed coming and they are looking at a June start.  That would mean offices would open fairly soon.  With all that being said, I am still going to keep this in the rumor section for now.  But if you are a fan of reading a book before you see the movie, I highly reccomend you pick up a copy.

Zach GalifianakisMore details are coming out about LOOMIS FARGO starring Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis.  Not long ago rumors were flying about this comedy caper heading to Winston-Salem.  However, my other sources are saying otherwise.  The latest scoop is that the name has reverted back to ARMORED CAR and that it will indeed be shot here in Wilmywood.  When?  Well, my sources say that they plan on opening offices in May with a production start in July.

secretsLiesWhat you think I am done?  Honey, I’ve been workin’ like a fiend trying to get you all the scoop.  Let’s move on to recently wrapped SECRETS & LIES. Some said S&L was moving to Charlotte.  Others said no, they are staying here.  They are both correct.  The latest Intel is that S&L would shoot here in Wilmywood to complete their 10 episode commitment, which means they could be back this summer.  Then, after those ten or if they have a season two, they would move to Charlotte.  They said have fully established locations they cannot leave behind within those first 10 episodes.

tscc3

michael-cera-john-hawkesHoly Chiptole, I’ve actually got more scoop, but I am saving that for tomorrow!  So what else is going on?  Yesterday we announced FX’s HOW AND WHY has officially opened up offices at EUE/ScreenGems Studios. The pilot starring Michael Cera and John Hawkes is now accepting crew resumes. Please send resumes to howandwhypilot@gmail.com with your position in the subject line.

ncfilmEven though all that cool stuff is happening perhaps the BIGGEST news was the Impact Study that was FINALLY released yesterday!  This is HUGE!!!  The finding were exactly what we knew to be true, that Film=Jobs and NC gains from the industry being here.

“For every dollar of credit issued, the industry generated $9.11 in direct spending and contributed $1.52 in tax revenue back to North Carolina.”

$164M in business revenue to more than 1,000 small businesses across the State.”

“The incentive has allowed North Carolina to maintain a permanent crew base, providing 4,259 jobs at an average wage of $66,000, which is over a third higher than the national average for private industry ($41,750).”

NC Film Impact Study Released

ncfilm We have been waiting for over six months for the results of the impact study from Dr. Robert Handfield of North Carolina State University’s Poole College of Management.  The official title of the 50 page study is “A Supply Chain Study of the Economic Impact of the North Carolina Motion Picture & Television Industry.” This study includes not just job numbers, but the trickle down effect film has on small businesses as well.  How it impacts the state as a whole. Here is the official one page that highlights the 50 page study, plus at the bottom, there is a link to the study itself.

Study Finds North Carolina Film and Television Tax Incentive Spurs Economic Growth, Yields Positive Return on Investment

A new study released today by North Carolina State Poole College of Management distinguished professor Dr. Robert Handfield found the tax incentive intended to attract film and television production to the State has produced a significant return on investment for North Carolina’s economy.  Beginning in 2007, when the incentive was first enacted, through 2012, the film and television industry has spent $1.02 billion in the state, and generated a projected $170,000,000 in tax revenue. The cost of the credit over the same time period was $112,000,000. The result means that for every dollar of credit issued, the industry generated $9.11 in direct spending and contributed $1.52 in tax revenue back to North Carolina.

The study, titled “A Supply Chain Study of the Economic Impact of the North Carolina Motion Picture & Television Industry”, aims to quantify the incentive’s return on investment (ROI) and using predictive models, determine what the financial impact will be both if the incentive is extended, and if the incentive is allowed to expire.

“The objective of this study was to present a clear picture of the film and television production incentive, how it impacts North Carolina’s economy, and how without it, the landscape for the industry might be drastically different,” said the study’s author Dr. Handfield. “The findings are quite clear on these matters, and reveal the incentive to be the driving force behind the economic success of North Carolina’s film and television industry.”

Below are highlights of the study’s key findings:

·         The direct spend by the film and television industry in North Carolina from 2007-2012 is $1,020,000,000. When compared to the cost of the credit ($112,000,000) over the same period of time, the result is for every dollar of the credit issued, the industry spends $9.11 within the State.

·         The projected tax revenue collected as a result of film and television production from 2007-2012 is $170,330,307. When compared to the cost of the credit ($112,000,000) over the same period of time, the result is for every dollar of the credit issued, the industry generates $1.52 in tax revenue back to the State.

·         For 2012 alone, the production tax incentive contributed a net positive cash flow of $25.3 million for North Carolina. This is the difference between the 2012 cost of the incentive ($60.14M) and tax revenue collected by state and local government ($85.4M).

·         The incentive has allowed North Carolina to maintain a permanent crew base, providing 4,259 jobs at an average wage of $66,000, which is over a third higher than the national average for private industry ($41,750).

·         Using predictive modeling forecasts, the study finds that if the production incentive is allowed to expire, 4,046 jobs would be eliminated and the industry’s tax contribution would shrink to $4.3M. Additionally, research predicts a loss of over
·         $164M in business revenue to more than 1,000 small businesses across the State.

·         The predictive model shows a significant benefit to the State associated with extending the production incentive. Empirical survey results and cost model projections suggest the industry would grow to a projected $587M, which would begin to rival the size of the industry in Georgia ($880M). The extension would also result in a projected work force of nearly 31,000, nearly 6,400 of which would be full-time production jobs.
